A braking device is urged against the front pieces of wood in the layer formed in the machine. - Pieces of sawn wood (8) are supplied in the machine length direction and form a layer which is then moved sideways in the machine cross-direction by a member (2) until it reaches a drop plate, where the pieces slide down onto a conveyor (7) which carries the pieces away for further processing. A braking device (10) engages with the front pieces in the layer.
