PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication unit for remote maintenance, which can conduct remote maintenance for a network unit even when its network function fails. SOLUTION: The communication equipment for remote maintenance is provided with a serial interface section 7 and a TCP/IP interface section 2, and when the serial interface section 7 receives data, the interface section 7 encrypts the data and provides the output of the encrypted data to the TCP/IP interface section 2 and the TCP/IP interface section 2 decodes the received data. Furthermore, the communication equipment for remote maintenance is provided with an area 4 storing system diagnostic information, starts communication only when maintenance is required and diagnoses the system periodically through the provision of a system diagnostic program and a timer program.
