PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road illumination device that ensures the illumination efficiency for both roadbed and footway possibly minimizing unnecessary light rays directed towards the outside of the roadbed and footway. SOLUTION: Arranged near to the light source 21 of a lamp are several louvers 71, and near to the socket 3 of the lamp 2 is a shield plate 72, which constitute a light distribution control plate 7 arranged between the reflection plate 4 of the lamp 2 and the front glass. The louvers 71 are slanted according to the direction of transmitting of necessary light rays so as to improve the illumination efficiency towards the roadbed and footway efficiently cutting unnecessary light rays.
