PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscope which is capable of lowering a specimen placing surface, has the illumination performance equal to that of the conventional microscope, is small in size and low in cost and has good operability. SOLUTION: The microscope which has a mirror 5 for deflecting the light from an illumination light source 1 toward an objective lens 39 and illuminates the specimen through a condenser lens 9 disposed above the mirror 5 has a stage bracket 34 which is disposed atop a base section 35 in order to fixely hold a stage 33 to be placed with the specimen 32 in an optical axis m direction of the objective lens 39, a condenser body 6 which is arranged atop the base section 34, a condenser lens holding member 10 which is disposed at the condenser body 6 and holds the condenser lens 9 and a vertical moving mechanisms 12 and 16 which vertically move the condenser lens holding member 10 and focusing mechanisms 65, 66, 67, 68, 36, 37 and 38 for moving the objective lens in the optical axis m direction.
