摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the surface energy of a substrate and to provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for high-density recording. SOLUTION: The surface energy of the substrate for a magnetic recording medium is controlled to 0.1 to 0.3 mJ/cm2. In order to control the surface energy of the substrate, a surface energy controlling layer having 0.1 to 0.3 mJ/cm2 surface energy is formed on the substrate. By controlling the surface energy of the substrate, crystallinity of a Co-based magnetic layer can be improved, and thereby, the magnetic characteristics of the magnetic layer can be improved. In particular, deterioration in the magnetic characteristics when the magnetic layer is made thin can be suppressed. Ultrahigh density recording over 40 Gbits/ inch2 is possible in the obtained magnetic recording medium, and the medium has low noise, low thermal fluctuation and low thermal demagnetization.
