PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly detect a desired read area in both main and sub scan directions using simple processing, even when the outside of the desired area in a size larger than the desired read area exists on the reader plane of an image reader. SOLUTION: It is judged, from data close to the edge of the height data of an object, whether, the object has the outside desired area larger than the desired read area, and when it is judged that the object has the outside desired area, the desired area existent inside the external form of the object is detected.
