PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for locking and holding a sliding door, having a handle which does not project from the surface of the sliding door, and which is excellent in controllability for unlocking. SOLUTION: In the device for locking and holding the sliding door, a latching strike is provided on a jamb of a building and the sliding door is provided with a latching part for latching the latching strike to hold the sliding door closed and also with a handle operating part for unlatching the latching part. A handle 51 capable of being pushed in the opening direction of the sliding door is provided in a recess in the front surface of a base 50 and a motive power direction changing mechanism comprising a drive lever 52, a first link lever 58, a crank 65 and a joint arm 71 for transmitting the force of pushing operation for the handle 51 to the interlock lever 28 of the latching part is provided behind the base 50.
