6-Substituted-4,5-epoxy-6-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one derivatives represented by the general formula (I), wherein R<1> represents optionally substituted lower alkyl, optionally substituted lower aryl or optionally substituted aralkyl. These compounds are usable as useful intermediates in producing scyphostatin which remarkably inhibits neutral sphingomyelinase at a low concentration and thus is expected as useful as remedies for inflammatory, immunological and nervous diseases.
