Production of o-chloromethylbenzoyl chlorides (I) by reacting benzo-condensed lactones (II) with thionyl chloride is carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of (a) a catalyst (III) containing boron, selected from boric acid and anhydride, borates, boronic acid and boronic esters, and (b) a quaternary ammonium salt (IV). Production of o-chloromethylbenzoyl chlorides of formula (I) by reacting benzo-condensed lactones of formula (II) with thionyl chloride is carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of (a) a catalyst (III) containing boron, selected from boric acid and anhydride, borates, boronic acid and boronic esters, and (b) a quaternary ammonium salt (IV).
