A liquid-crystal display in which liquid crystal is driven by electric fields parallel to a substrate. On one of a pair of substrates are formed a plurality of gate lines (X>m-1<, X>m<), a plurality of data lines (Y>m-1<, Y>m<), switching elements (13) connected to the gate lines (X>m-1<) and the data lines (Y>m-1<) at their intersections, pixel electrodes (11) connected to the data lines (Y>m-1<) through the switching elements (13), and opposite electrodes (12) paired with the pixel electrodes (11). A plurality of capacitors (14a, 14b) for storing electric charge of the pixel electrodes (11) are distributed corresponding to the intersections of the gate lines (X>m-1<, X>m<) and data lines (Y>m-1<, Y>m<).
