Vacuum distillation apparatus comprises a vaporizing section (1) containing the liquid (5) to be distilled, a condenser (7), a membrane pump (8) connected to the outlet of the condenser and a second flask (12) for collecting condensate which is connected to the pump outlet. A by-pass (11) with control valve (10) is fitted across the low and high pressure sides of the pump. An independent claim is included for a vacuum distillation process using the above apparatus in which gas is fed to the suction side of the pump for a short time, by opening the control valve to increase flow through.
