A "do not disturb" (DND) telephone subscriber feature is provided that promp ts a caller for an access code, such as a personal identification number (PIN), and based on the caller's inputted response, determines whether to complete the call to a subscriber. If the caller enters a valid code, then the call i s placed to the subscriber's phone. Otherwise, the system hangs up, or alternately, sends the caller to a voice messaging system so that the caller can leave a voice message for the subscriber.
