An absorbent dressing comprising a hydrophilic gel absorbent layer having a patterned surface on at least one major surface thereof is provided. The patterned surface allows greater surface area for absorption of wound exudat e when oriented toward the wound surface, while reducing the absorbent surface area in direct or indirect contact with the wound.
