For supporting a book for a person confined to bed, the device has a column-type foot frame containing a foot part (10) and an upright tube (16), from which a locating surface for objects projects. The foot part is movable and alterable in length. The locating surface (32) is formed as an inclined support surface and has two vane-type surface areas (34,34a). Each of the surface areas near its outer side edge (36) is provided with a fixture device (52,70) for a corresponding outer edge of a book or other printed matter.
