The invention relates to an electrode pair consisting of an anode having a semiconductor coating and a cathode. The invention also relates to a method for electrolytically separating water, especially for obtaining hydrogen. The base material of the cathode and/or anode consists of titanium or titanium that is coated with platinum. The anode is coated with an additional semiconductor coating, preferably titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is doped with iron. The advantage of said electrode pair is that a volume of hydrogen can be produced per time unit and that said electrode pair allows for a simple method that can be carried out in ambience conditions which do not involve costly arrangements for producing hydrogen, whereby said volume is increased compared to prior art. In addition, the anode of the inventive electrode pair can be exposed to UV radiation for increasing the efficiency.
