Automatic configuration of a communication link in a process control system which uses two different protocols

A system and method configures a communication link in a process control system having a controller 12 connected to an I/O device 16 via local 44 and a remote 46 I/O interfaces communicatively coupled via a remote I/O communication bus 18. The system and method specifies a remote connection between the controller and the I/O device, recognizes that the remote connection requires communications over the remote I/O communication bus, and automatically configures the local and remote I/O interfaces to enable communications to be automatically routed between the controller and the I/O device. Configuration of the I/O interfaces involves automatically generating objects to be stored in the I/O devices. The objects perform protocol conversion. Automatic identification and interrogation of I/O devices is also disclosed.
