PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing member for an Al alloy vehicle body without impairing advantages such as lightness and an energy absorbing property or the like. SOLUTION: This energy absorbing member for the vehicle body comprises a hollow shape 1 with a rectangular cross section and a reinforcing shape 2 fitted to the front face on the collision face side of the hollow shape. The hollow shape 1 and the reinforcing shape 2 are made of an aluminum alloy extruded shape. The reinforcing shape 2 has an opened cross section with a nearly hat- shaped cross section constituted of a collision wall 6 nearly parallel with the collision face of the hollow shape 1, a plurality of parallel horizontal ribs 7a, 7b, 7c reinforcing the collision wall 6, and vertical flanges 8a, 8b, 8c provided at the tips of the horizontal ribs 7a, 7b, 7c. The reinforcing shape 2 is connected to the collision face of the hollow shape 1 at the vertical flanges 8a, 8b, 8c.
