METHOD FOR SMOOTHING SURFACE OF PROTECTIVE FILM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for smoothing the surface of a protective film composed essentially of ceramics showing roughness. SOLUTION: In this method, a slurry or gel film composed essentially of ceramics is provided to the surface of a protective film and heating is applied to the slurry/gel film to remove volatile matter, and then heating is further applied to the slurry/gel film to harden the film and also bond it to the protective film under it. The slurry/gel film is often composed essentially of yttria- stabilized zirconia and a precursor of oxide matrix. Related products are also noted.
