PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2-fluoroisobutyric acid or its ester, capable of effectively producing the highly pure product on an industrial scale. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2-fluoroisobutyric acid or its ester comprises fluorinating 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid or its ester, wherein methacrylic acid or its ester which is formed as a by-product is halogenated, then separated and removed by distillation or the like so that the highly pure 2-fluoroisobutyric acid or its ester is produced.
