PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new means for advantageously avoiding the decarbonization on the surface of a steel wire, esp. high-carbon steel wire when it is to be put to heat treatment. SOLUTION: The subject method comprises the following: when a steel wire is to be put to heat treatment prior to being subjected to drawing, carbon is made to adhere at 0.1-0.3 g/kg to the surface of the steel wire followed by making the heat treatment.
