PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydroxyaromatic compound, especially a compound excellent from the viewpoint of industrial operation, comprising the decomposition of a hydroperoxy aromatic compound followed by the neutralization and purification of the produced hydroxyaromatic compound and effective for suppressing the generation of a heavy component in and after the neutralization step to improve the yield of the objective hydroxyaromatic compound and prevent the corrosion of the apparatus. SOLUTION: The objective method for the production of a hydroxyaromatic compound contains the following steps. Decomposition step: a step to decompose a hydroperoxy aromatic compound in the presence of an acidic substance to obtain a hydroxyaromatic compound and a ketone compound; neutralization step: a step to neutralize the liquid containing the hydroxyaromatic compound obtained by the decomposition step with an alkaline aqueous solution keeping the A value to 4.5-5.5 (A value is the pH of water layer obtained by collecting exclusively the oil layer after neutralization, thoroughly mixing the oil with 1/2 volume of ion-exchanged water based on the oil and leaving the mixture at rest); and purification step to separate a low-boiling component from the hydroxyaromatic compound by the distillation of the oil layer obtained by the neutralization step. |
