PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press apparatus and a method of press, in which the thrust of the linear motor is increased without impairing an excellent controllability of the linear motor. SOLUTION: A lower chamber 10E of a cylinder 10A is opened to the atmosphere when a port A and a port R1 are connected by switching a three-way electromagnetic valve 16A, and air in the lower chamber 10E of the cylinder of an air balancer 10 is exhausted. A port B and a port P are connected by switching a three-way electromagnetic valve 15A, and air is supplied to an upper chamber 10D of the air balancer 10. In this situation, a linear motor generates a downward thrust, and such movable parts as a slide descend to the bottom dead center while pressurizing a work by making use of the thrusts of the linear motors 6 and 7 as thrusts in the pressurizing direction. Further, air is supplied to the upper chamber 10D of the air balancer 10 so that a thrust is generated in the pressurizing direction, thus the air balancer 10 increases the pressurizing force of the press.
