PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing a bar stock or a wire rod composed of lead-free free cutting phosphor bronze having good machinability, tensile strength, hardness and plastic workability. CONSTITUTION: This bar stock or wire rod of lead-free free cutting phosphor bronze is prepared by forming lead-free free cutting phosphor bronze containing, by weight, 3.0 to 4.5% Sn, 1.5 to 4.5% Zn, 0.01 to 0.5% P, 0.01 to 0.5% Fe, 0.01 to 2.0% Sb, 0.1 to 2.5% Bi, and the balance copper and subjecting the above lead-free free cutting phosphor bronze to cold plastic working of 10 to 60%.
