Deflection of a rolled material segment (2) moving at high speed is achieved by subjecting it to a perpendicular electromagnetic force (F). The force is produced by a current which flows through the material segment and through a fixed current conductor (5). As a consequence of this force, the material segment is pivoted away from the current conductor (5). The apparatus includes a current carrier (5) which has a contact electrode (6). The current carrier (5) is connected to another contact electrode with a current source (7), a capacitor (8) and a spark switching unit (9). The distance between the rolled material and the contact electrodes (6, 10) is such that an arc (11) can be produced between them. |
