METHOD FOR PRODUCING TRIFLUOROMETHYL CARBINOL DERIVATIVE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a trifluoromethyl carbinol derivative useful as a precursor for a 3-trifluoromethyl-3-hydroxypropionic acid derivative known as an intermediate for functional materials such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and ferroelectric liquid crystals. SOLUTION: The objective trifluoromethyl carbinol derivative of general formula 6 is produced by condensing a trifluoromethyl ketone of general formula 5 with an imine of general formula 3 or an enamine of general formula 4 derived from a primary amine or secondary amine and a ketone and hydrolyzing the condensation product under acidic condition. A concrete example of the compound of general formula 6 is 3-trifluoromethyl-3-hydroxy-1-phenyl-1- butanone.
