A gear locking device (10) includes a housing (12) defining an aperture (14), with a locking pin (16) being arranged to slide through the aperture (14). The locking pin (16) can slide from a locked position in which it extends from the housing (12) so as to prevent movement of a gear lever (24), to an unlocked position in which the locking pin (16) is retracted, thereby allowing the gear lever (24) to be moved. A spring (44) is fitted to the locking pin (16) and is arranged to act against the housing (12), so as to bias the locking pin (16) into the locked position. The locking pin (16) is held in the retracted, unlocked position by means of a holding latch which is mounted within the housing (12). The housing (12) further includes a solenoid which is activated by a control unit (26) to release the holding latch, thereby allowing the compressed spring (44) to force the locking pin (16) into the locked position. |
