[Also in Division G3] A load 12, which may be the field winding of an alternator in a car electrical system, is supplied from input terminals 13, 15 by way of a transistor 10 which is controlled by a further transistor 16 associated with avalanche diodes 22, 24 and resistors 17, 19 connected as shown across the terminals 13, 15. When the input voltage is low, diodes 22, 24 are non-conducting and transistor 16 controls transistor 10 to supply an increasing current with increasing supply voltage until diode 24 is rendered conductive to clamp the voltage at the base of transistor 16 with respect to terminal 13; if the supply voltage further increases, transistor 10 then supplies a constant current until diode 22 breaks down to clamp the emitter voltage of transistor 16 with respect to terminal 15. With diodes 22 and 24 conducting transistor 10 is then controlled so that a further small increase in supply voltage results in a large decrease in load current (Fig. 2, not shown). The circuit thus presents a negative resistance characteristic with respect to a voltage applied to terminals 13, 15. The resistor 17 may be replaced by a potentiometer (Fig. 3, not shown) so that the slope of the negative resistance portion of the characteristic may be varied, and the diode 22 may be biased by a separate voltage (Fig. 4, not shown). A field-effect transistor may replace the diode 24, the resistor 19 and the transistor 16 (Fig. 5, not shown).</p>
