PURPOSE: To provide a projector which is capable of realizing projected images which are high in light utilization efficiency and bright while a reflection type liquid crystal device and an integrator optical system are combined. CONSTITUTION: The direction of the polarization separation by a polarization conversion element 40 of the projector having a light source lamp 10, a luminous flux splitting optical element 20, the polarization conversion element 40, a polarization selection element 60 having a polarization selection surface 62 and an electro-optic device 1000 is set in X-axis direction when the incident surface inclusive of the normal of the polarization selection surface 62 and the central axis of the incident light is assumed and when the direction parallel with the incident surface and orthogonal with the central axis of the incident light is defined as the X-axis direction and the direction orthogonal with the incident surface as Y-axis direction.
