PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to maximize user satisfaction by minimizing initialization time for every power application. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a switch(100) for selecting operation mode; a non-volatile memory(110) for storing operation state data such as operation on/off state, operation mode, desired temperature and set air volume; and a micro computer(120) operating in the operation mode selected by the switch, and which stores the current state information and calculated capacity value relating to electromagnetic valve into the non-volatile memory. A method comprises the first step of calculating electromagnetic valve related capacity for each indoor unit, operating the air conditioner by using the calculated capacity and storing the calculated capacity value into a non-volatile memory; and the second step of operating the air conditioner by using the capacity value related to electromagnetic valve, if the mode which is set by a switch upon occurrence of an instantaneous power outage power or power re-application, is a power outage compensation mode.
