PURPOSE: To prevent the light reflection from the light exit side surface of a resin molded chassis of a liquid crystal light valve in a projection type liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION: The natural light generated from a light source 1 passes a field lens (condenser lens) 2, is made to linearly polarized light by an incident side polarizing plate 3a and is made incident on the liquid crystal light valve 4. The linearly polarized light made incident on the liquid crystal light valve 4 is modulated as a change of the polarization state according to video signals. The light emitted from the liquid crystal light valve 4 passes an exit side polarizing plate 3b and is then magnified and projected by a projection lens 5 to a screen 6. The light exit side surface of the resin molded chassis of the liquid crystal light valve 4 is roughened in order to prevent the reflection of the light.
