PURPOSE: A cruise control method of a vehicle is provided to control traffic smoothly by variably controlling distance between vehicles according to traveling of the preceding vehicle, and to prevent intervention of the vehicle by keeping optimal safety distance. CONSTITUTION: A target distance from the preceding vehicle is calculated, and the distance between the vehicles is measured. Vehicle speed is regulated with controlling a brake actuator and a throttle valve actuator to converge the measured distance between vehicles to the target distance. Reduction speed of the preceding vehicle is calculated. Preliminary distance between vehicles is calculated based on the maximum reduction speed to change the target distance between vehicles in case of the calculated reduction speed to be over the reference reduction speed. The target safety distance between vehicles is controlled variably according to traveling of the preceding vehicle. The collision is prevented with securing the long distance from the preceding vehicle in accelerating or decelerating suddenly. The cruise control method prevents intervention of the vehicle by keeping the optimal safety distance.
