PURPOSE: A method for controlling a display state of a public telephone is provided to offer a high advertisement effect to a sponsor at a low price by displaying an advertisement through a large display device of a multi-functional public telephone installed at an unspecific space, and coefficiently and quickly receive new version advertisement information by downloading corresponding advertisement information at a predetermined uniform period and updating and storing downloaded advertisement information. CONSTITUTION: A CPU resets a timer for starting a count(S1). The CPU checks whether a timer counted by the timer passes the predetermined first reference time(S2). If the timer counted by the timer does not pass the predetermined first reference time, the CPU checks whether an operation mode is sensed(S3). If the operation mode is sensed, the CPU controls an LCD panel, detects a guide sentence to a current operation mode stored in a memory, and displays the detected guide sentence on the LCD panel(S4). If the timer counted by the timer passes the predetermined first reference time, the CPU detects advertisement information stored in the memory and controls the LCD panel to display detected advertisement information(S5). If the operation mode is detected by a user during an advertisement mode for displaying advertisement information(S6), the CPU releases a display state of current displaying advertisement information(S7) and displays the guide sentence to a corresponding operation mode.
