PURPOSE: Modulating/demodulating method and device for data are provided to prevent an error from being transferred, and to improving recording density. CONSTITUTION: A serial/parallel converter(2) converts a serial bit stream into two-beat unit. A shift register(4) shifts the beats from the converter by cycle while supplying a bit pattern of eight-beat to an encoding parser(6). The parser compares a source word pattern with the beat patterns from the shift register. Moreover, the encoding parser supplies a select signal to an encoder(8) for representing a table used in converting codes, and the parser supplies a first beat pattern to the encoder. The encoder converts a matching pattern from the encoding parser into a code word of a corresponding covert table. The code word is inputted to an NRZI(Non-Return-to-Zero-Invert) converter(12) in a serial state. Then, the NRZI converter converts the code word from the converter.
