The method includes reduction of the amount of fuel (7) supplied to engine when speed of vehicle (1) is greater than determined control speed. If this does not reduce speed to required speed, the brakes (13) are applied. The control speed is determined after detecting the obstacle (12) and the distance to it, but if there is no obstacle detected, the control speed is constant. An Independent claim is also included for a system in accordance with the method.
