PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting a crack of a transparent container neck. SOLUTION: In a first optical sub-assembly, a first light source 34 emits light energy onto the container neck during rotation of the container 34, and a first optical sensor 36 receives the part of the first light energy reflected from a crack in the horizontal direction of the container neck. A second optical sub-assembly and a third optical sub-assembly have second and third light sources 40, 44 and second and third sensors 42, 46 related thereto respectively, for emitting light energy onto the container neck and for receiving energy reflected from a crack in the vertical direction of the container neck. Each optical sub-assembly has a mounting plate, and thereby in the optical sub- assemblies, the first light source and sensor are arranged on a vertical plane, and the second and third light sources and sensors are arranged forming an array in the mirror image relation facing on the both sides of the vertical plane.
