PURPOSE: A magnetic recording player is provided to recognize characteristic of a tape through recording and playing back signals on plural tracks in traveling state of the tape. CONSTITUTION: An audio signal separated from an analog broadcast signal is separated into stereo signal by an audio signal processor(522). The signal is modulated by a modulate/demodulate unit(524) for passing through a switch(545), a recording amplifier(546), and a switch(548). Then, the signal is transferred to first head couples(705,706) for being recorded on a tape. In a test mode, a microcomputer(531) operates a full erase head(720) for erasing the signal on the tape while driving a test signal generator(532). A test signal passes through the switch(523) for being recorded on an inclined track of the tape. Second head couples trace the track for playing back the test signal. The test signal is transferred to the microcomputer for being compared with a reference signal. Therefore, characteristic of the tape is recognized.
