SOLUTION: This air fuel ratio controller is mounted in an exhaust pipe 11 of an engine 3, and comprises a catalytic converter 12 for purifying the exhaust gas exhausted from the engine 3, an estimating means 2 (step 9) for estimating an oxygen storage amount OSC of oxygen stored in the catalytic converter 12, a RAM 2c (step 10) for storing the oxygen storage amount OSC estimated by the estimating means 2 at the stop of the engine 3, a target air fuel ratio determining means 2 (step 4) for determining a target air fuel ratio coefficient KCMD corresponding to the operating condition of the engine 3, and a target air fuel ratio correcting means 2 (step 4) for correcting the target air fuel ratio coefficient KCMD determined by the target air fuel ratio determining means, corresponding to the oxygen storage amount OSC stored in the RAM 2c.
