METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HEAT TREATMENT OF TURNOUT RAIL

PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for heat treatment of a turnout rail is provided to enhance the physical properties of a rail by improving abrasion resistance through curing processes of a turnout rail head. CONSTITUTION: A turnout rail(10) of a coarse pearlite structure is pre-heated in the whole portion at 500 to 600deg.C via a gas burner. A head of the rail(10) is flame heated by gas burners(50) installed over the head and adjacent both sides of the head up to 800 to 1000deg.C at or over an Ac3 transformation temperature with a stable austenite structure after pre-heating. Air mist(61) and low-pressure compressed air from a blower pipe(62) are repeatedly injected to the heated rail head at a temperature of 800 to 500deg.C for slack quenching. The rail head is transformed into a fine pearlite structure. The lower part is closed by a shielding plate and only the rail head is sprayed with cooling water to prevent bending deformation of the rail(10).
