PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automate touch inspection of an automobile panel switch. SOLUTION: A load cell 5 is sandwiched between the holder 10 of a measuring element and the measuring element 4, with the measuring element attached to a moving mechanism comprising servomotors M1, M2 and M3 and three ball screws 1, 2 and 3 driven by the servomotors. A switch is pressed by the load cell, and waveform data showing variations in its pressing force along pressing direction is compared with reference waveform data originated from conforming article data, to determine whether or not the panel switch is defective. By providing a personal computer with the function of creating a reference waveform from accumulated data, the determining accuracy can be enhanced through the renewal of the reference waveform. The personal computer is also given the function of statistically processing at each inspection position the data obtained as the order of inspection is varied, so as to grasp a tendency of defectives to arise. Data about a path of inspection for each kind of workpiece W is saved and an attached barcode reader 54 is used to read a barcode 55 affixed to each workpiece W, so as to identify the kind of each workpiece and cause the moving mechanism to give an indication, thereby making it possible to deal with many kinds of articles.
