[Also in Divisions B3 and G1] A machine for work-setting or work-checking comprises an accurately-machined base 10, a sine bar 12 pivotally mounted in upstanding supports 101 carried by the base, setting rollers 123 mounted on the sine bar, a table 13 slidably mounted on the sine bar with its flat upper face in a plane parallel to that containing the axes of the setting rollers, means for attaching work setting or work checking means to the table, and means for effecting a turning movement of the sine bar and a reciprocation of the table relatively to the sine bar. The sine bar is fixed on a shaft 11 which carries a rotatably-mounted pinion 14 meshing with a rack 133 on the underside of the table; laterally-adjustable stops on the sine bar are settable by screws 21 to prevent or limit the reciprocation of the table when the pinion is turned by a handle 15. The machine is used primarily for dressing grinding wheels (see Division B3) by fitting a dressing tool carrier 16 to the table, a radiused edge being produced when the stops 9 lock the tables against reciprocation, and the pinion 14 is oscillated to rock the sine bar and cause the diamond tool 173 to sweep through an arc, and an angular edge being formed by inserting a peg 26 in registering holes 104, 129 in an upright 101 and a quadrant 125 forming part of the sine bar so that the latter is then fixed in desired angular position and then reciprocating the tables 13 by the pinion 14. Alternatively, for angular dressing, the sine bar is turned until one of the setting rollers 123 engages an appropriate gauge block positioned on a strip 102 on the machine base and a clamp 231 is then arranged to lock the quadrant 125 against the adjacent upright 101. In the use of the machine for work-setting or work-checking a gauge 31, Fig. 7, is mounted on the table 13 which together with the sine bar can then be adjusted as described above. |
