PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for canceling an echo in a remote communication system. SOLUTION: A local subscriber X and a subscriber Y resident at the remote end of a transmission link exchange information. An echo canceller 5 is assigned to at least the one subscriber X, and its parameter is set especially as a function of an echo delay time (i). A sign of a transmission signal x(t) of the subscriber X and the sign of a reception signal y(t) of the subscriber X depend on an equal time interval Ti, resulting that code sequences xi, yi stored and compared mutually are produced. The received signal y(t) is detected as an echo in the case of direct countermeasure between the code sequences xi, yi of the reception signal y(t) and the transmission signal x(t) or the counter measure (xi=yi or Equation 1) as a result of inversion, and the echo delay time (i) can be calculated.
