A preferred embodiment of the present invention is a method for producing nanometer-sized ceramic powders, comprising (a) providing a pressurized fluid atomizing medi um containing oxygen, nitrogen or chlorine mainly (b) providing a super-heated metal or alloy melt to a spontaneous reaction temperature (c) the reactant of the medium with the sup er- heated metal or alloy melt to form nanometer-sized ceramic particles.
