PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fingerprint matching precision even through the quality of finger print is fluctuated for every registrant due to reading state at the time of registration. SOLUTION: When a fingerprint is registered, a linear data extracting means 4 extracts linear data from read binary fingerprint picture, fingerprint imaging is performed plural times, a matching straight line matched with the linear data is searched from a binarozed fingerprint picture about each imaged fingerprint picture, the relative position of each matching straight line is compared with the relative position of each linear data to define the total amount of matching numbers as a score value, a collation level setting means 8 sets the mean value of score values calculated plural times in a collation level, and a storing means 9 stores the linear data and the collation level in each registrant. When the fingerprint is collated, a judgement means 10 judges fingerprints as belonging to the same person when a calculated score value satisfies a collation level value.
