PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problem that although maximizing efficiency of compressor airfoils is primarily effected by optimizing the velocity distributions over the positive pressure and negative pressure sides of the airfoil, the efficiency is typically limited in conventional compressor design by the requirement for a suitable stall margin, and any further increase in efficiency results in a reduction in stall margin, and conversely, further increase in stall margin results in decrease in efficiency. SOLUTION: The compressor airfoil 12 includes a positive pressure side surface 18 and a negative pressure side surface 20 extending from a root 22 to a tip 24 and between a leading edge 26 and a trailing edge 28. Transverse sections have respective chords and chamber lines. Centers 34 of gravity of the sections are aligned along a bowed stacking axis either tangentially, axially, or both, for improving performance.
