PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that can detect the exposure quantity excluding a smear component in a short time. SOLUTION: An image pickup element drive section 22 supplies drive pulsesϕVn andϕHn, which read signal charges generated in each light receiving section 182 of, e.g., a 1st row and a 5th row, but do not read signal charges of a 3rd row and a 7th row for an odd number field period, to an inter-line type image pickup element 18 where the light receiving sections 182 are laid out in a matrix form (4 columns×8 rows in this explanation) in the photometry state to read an image signal including photometry information and a smear component and a smear signal including only the smear component from an image pickup element 18. An exposure detection section 40 subtracts the smear signal from the image signal to output a charge quantity (exposure) from which the effect of smear can be excluded.
