PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sintered emitter for a discharge electrode preventing a short life, an electrode for a discharge lamp using the emitter, a low pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp and a lighting apparatus. SOLUTION: The emitter for a discharge electrode consists mainly of a sintered compound containing an alkaline-earth element and transition metal element which is fine particles satisfying the specific surface of 10 m2<a<200 m2. Otherwise, it can be substituted by a sintered compound comprising mainly an alkaline-earth element and transition metal element where the primary particles have an average diameter of 10 to 500 nm and the secondary particles comprising a porous aggregate of the primary particles. The secondary particles are to be of a porocity of 30% or more and to be between the average sizes of 0.5 to 5μm. The emitter for the discharge electrode can be made to compose the electrode for the discharge lamp by being supported on a coil filament or a cup conductor. The use of the emitter for the discharge electrode contributes to the glow/arc transition with a few glow discharge power and the consumption is made less.
