PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the read image quality of a document having a special shape like a wavy document or a book document. SOLUTION: An image reader is provided with a lamp 2 which irradiated a document G placed on a platen 1 as a document placing means with light, a CCD 4 which receives reflected light from the document G of light radiated from the lamp 2, and transmittance adjustment means (for example, a diffusing plate 5) which adjusts the transmittance on a 1st path through which reflected light from the document G goes toward the CCD 4 and that on the other 2nd optical path.
