PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leak detector capable of easily detecting leaks in a sealed vessel by means of a simple arrangement, and a method of detecting leaks. SOLUTION: The leak detector 10 comprises a chamber 16 enclosing the sealant 14 of the sealed container 12, a pressure dropping means (not shown in the figure) for causing a pressure drop by venting air from an air vent 18 in the chamber 16 enclosing the sealant 14, a weight 20 placed on and abutting against the sealant 14 enclosed in the chamber 16, and a proximity sensor 22 for detecting the separation or approach of the weight 20. The sealing state of the sealant 14 can be detected based on data about the detection of the separation or approach of the weight 20.
