PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image on a large-sized document without reducing the quantity of irradiating light. SOLUTION: An image reader is provided with a platen 2 as a document placing means, on which the document as an image read object is placed, and a surface light source guide 3 provided with plural positioning parts 31a to 31d which are arranged so as to enclose the periphery of the document placing face on the platen 2 and position a surface light source M which two- dimensionally irradiated the document placed on the platen 2 from above.
