PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive head wherein the reduction of the MR ratio accompanying the reduction of the thickness of a magnetoresistive element is suppressed. SOLUTION: The magnetoresistive head is provided with the magnetoresistive element which is a multi-layered film including a pinned layer 3 whose direction of magnetization is fixed, a non-magnetic metal layer 4 formed on the pinned layer, a free magnetic layer 5 formed on the non-magnetic metal layer and whose direction of magnetization is changed in accordance with an external magnetic field and a protective layer 6 formed on the free magnetic layer and constituted of at least one material selected from the materials group consisting of a nitride, an oxide, a sulfide and a carbide and shows a resistance change in accordance with the change of the direction of magnetization of the free magnetic layer.
